Sherry Sims Asay

June 12, 1948 ~ July 19, 2020 (age 72)

Obituary

It is with great sadness we announce Sherry Sims Asay, age 72, passed away on July 19, 2020, surrounded by loved ones. A part of our heart is gone, but we know the loss is only on our side. Mom was received into the waiting arms of Heavenly Father, as well as her loving husband, Bill Sims, her son Jason Sims, and her dad, Glenn Kopp and many other family members. We know for certain it was the most joyful reunion.
Sherry Lynn Kopp was born the fourth child of 5 to Glenn and Doris Maxine Kopp on June 12, 1948, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was raised on a ranch on Pine Creek Bench, near Swan Valley, Idaho. She loved to ski at Pine Basin, go to the movies with her brothers in Idaho Falls, and loved being with her dad and watching him work. Sherry graduated from Idaho Falls High School and attended cosmetology school.
She was working in the Swan Valley Commissary when her mother introduced her to a  handsome Forest Service Ranger, Bill Sims. Bill had to fight for Sherry because she was adored by her brothers and lots of young guys. They were married in Swan Valley, Idaho on September 15, 1967, and took a fun California coastline trip for their honeymoon. As a child, Sherry's greatest desire was to become a mother, and together they raised five children, making their home in Roosevelt, Utah. She was a wonderful mother and will be greatly missed by those who came to rely on her love and support.
She served in many callings as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has fond memories of serving as a leader in Young Women's. Her most recent calling was in the Bishop's Storehouse. She worked for many years for the Duchesne County School District.
Sherry's disposition always leaned towards love and compassion. She left quite an impact on friends and the community as someone who loves and cares for others. If you ran into her at the store or the movies (her favorite pastime), you'd be received with a smile and warm hello. She made friends everywhere she went and valued the friendships she made over the years. She attended countless sporting events for her children and could often be heard cheering loudly, often at the embarrassment of her kids. She was a devoted mother and wife, and cared for her husband until he succumbed to cancer in 2007.
She was blessed to meet LaVell Asay and his exceptional family, who also became her own children. They were married in March 2014. LaVell took great care of Sherry as her health began to slowly decline around this time. They enjoyed dancing together and taking rides around town to visit with their friends and those they loved.
Her cherished children are Paul Sims, Midway, Utah; David (Andrea) Sims, Lehi, Utah; the late Jason (Melinda) Sims, and Scott (Kristin) Sims both of Roosevelt, Utah; and Julie (Austin) Sherman, Price, Utah.

She also cherished LaVell's children as her own, Tammie Asay, Ron (Korinne) Asay, Ken (Karen) Asay, Laurel (Mark) Seymour, all of Roosevelt, Utah; Geary Asay Provo, Utah. She was Grandma Sherry to 31 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren (biological and adopted) and absolutely loved to spoil them rotten with sweets and toys.
Sherry endured difficult times with her health and taught us that the human body can suffer to great lengths. However, never a murmured complaint left her lips. She was kind to the health professionals that cared for her. Our family is grateful for those that cared for our mom over the years.
While her mortal journey ended too soon, her spirit lives on. Our pillows are wet with tears, but she wouldn't want us to cry, so instead, we look forward to seeing her again at our joyful reunion knowing that our love extends beyond this existence.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 23,2020 at 11:00 am at the Hullinger Mortuary, with a viewing at 10:00 am at the same location. Burial in the Roosevelt Memorial Park. All are invited to attend. Funeral services can also be on the Hullinger Mortuary website, under Sherry's name.
