Walter Charles Wiegand, 85, passed peacefully at his home in Fort Mohave, Arizona, surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 6, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan.
Walter proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1967. He served as a Second-Class Petty Officer and Machinist Mate aboard the USS *Gurke* DD-783 destroyer. During his service, he was recognized for achieving the highest score on the Naval Academy test at that time.
Walter met the love of his life, Jean Marshall, in Pullman, Washington in 1968. Walter and his brother, Hank, were well-known and respected subcontractors in the area and he frequently visited the local Chinese restaurant, “The Oriental”, where Jean worked as a waitress. Their real beginning came one summer day in 1968 when Walter made a sharp turn onto Main Street, nearly clipping the front end of Jean’s Plymouth Opal. She honked her horn in frustration while Walter leaned out of his truck window flashing a wide grin and waving. From that moment on, she was smitten. A year later they married and went on to share 57 wonderful years together.
Walter was the son of the late Dorothy Staley and Henry Wiegand. He was preceded in death by his brother Hank Wiegand; sisters Betty Stier and Mary Thorne Hawkinson; and granddaughter Jilene Webb.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean Wiegand; daughters Kathy Wiegand (Steve Pierce), New Hampshire; Mary & Richard Webb, Arizona; and Dottie & Brad Norman, Washington; grandchildren, Michael, Hank, Matthew, and Rakel; and great-grandchildren Emma, Ellie, Elizabeth, and Olivia.
Walter loved the outdoors and treasured time spent with family and friends. Many lasting memories were made each year at hunting camps. He held a pilot’s license and was known for his spontaneous spirit, sometimes flying Jean, his brother, and sister-in-law more than 300 miles just to have dinner together.
Walter and Jean spent several years traveling across the United States in their motorhome before eventually settling in Fort Mohave, Arizona. One of the great adventures of his life was gold mining in Alaska with his wife and brother-in-law. In recent years, he also enjoyed off-roading in the Arizona desert.
For nearly 20 years, Walter owned Walt Wiegand Construction & Roustabout Service in Roosevelt, Utah, where he remodeled and built homes throughout the Uintah Basin and provided roustabout service in the refinery and oil fields. He also owned and operated a trucking service and Lightning Hot Oil Service.
Walter was known for his steely resolve and his belief in getting the job done right—never cutting corners. He led both his business and his family with integrity and strength, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. At just 14 years old, Walter left school and went to work full-time to help support his family. It was a testament to the work ethic and determination that defined his entire life—he never stopped working.
Walter will be remembered for his strength, humor, adventurous spirit, and unwavering dedication to his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the family he loved so deeply.
Funeral services and a Celebration of Life will be held at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Laughlin, Nevada, on April 11, 2026 at 10:00AM.
