August 24, 2026, at the age of 81, Susan Louise Thomas Nielsen passed away peacefully at her daughter’s home in Myton, Utah, surrounded by her family.

Susan was born on January 4, 1945, in Dragerton, Utah, to Gloria Ada Denison Thomas and Theodore Williams Thomas Jr. When she was 11 years old, her family moved to Myton, where they purchased the old Myton Hotel. Myton became an important part of Susan’s life, and it was there that she formed a lifelong friendship with Jeanie Ross. Through this friendship, Susan was introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was baptized at the age of 13. She maintained a strong testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ, throughout her life and found great joy in serving others through various ward and stake callings.

Susan was active throughout her youth. She enjoyed swimming and water-skiing at Boram Lake, played drums in the school band, served as Pep Club president, participated in Girls State and the riding club, and was an attendant in Duchesne County royalty.

On June 14, 1963, Susan married her sweetheart, Floyd LaMar Nielsen, in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they raised seven children and built a life centered on family, faith, hard work, and service. Susan worked alongside Floyd on the farm, caring for animals, raising crops, gardening, canning, and helping wherever she was needed.

Susan loved animals, especially horses and dogs. Her love of horses led her to join the Altamont Saddlettes, a women’s equestrian drill team. She enjoyed participating in parades, rodeos, fairs, and community celebrations.

Susan attended beauty school; she worked as a beautician from her home, forming lasting friendships with many of her clients. When a chemical allergy forced her to leave the profession, she continued working in a variety of jobs, including at Didd’s Flowers and Nielsen’s Western Auto, as an Avon representative, secretary, and substitute teacher. She eventually found a special place working with children as a paraprofessional at Myton Elementary, where she worked for many years and loved helping children feel valued and cared for.

Above all, Susan treasured her family. She was blessed with 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. She took great pride in their lives and accomplishments and had a special way of making each person feel loved and important. She treasured family memories and carefully preserved them in scrapbooks filled with photographs, drawings, newspaper clippings, and other keepsakes.

Susan was creative, playful, and full of personality. She loved to laugh, tell stories, sing, decorate, garden, work with flowers, and spend time with those she loved. Her kindness, inner strength, humor, and positive outlook touched the lives of many.

Susan believed that when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. She understood that we cannot always control what happens to us, but we can choose how we live the life we have been given. She chose love, laughter, joy, faith, and family.

Susan leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and cherished memories. Her laughter, love, and example will live on in the lives of those she touched, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Susan is survived by her children, Rick (Kathy) Nielsen, of Roosevelt, Utah; Russ (Sharon) Nielsen, of Myton, Utah; Suzie Nielsen, of West Valley, Utah; Sandee (Brett) Cramer, of Roosevelt, Utah; Sheila (Trent) Birchell, of Myton, Utah; Jill (Mike) Jensen, of Cedarview, Utah; and Julie (Bryan) Perkins, of Myton, Utah; 25 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; and her sisters, Cindee and Charla. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Larry (Shelly) Nielsen, and sisters-in-law, Renae (Byron) Grant, Linda Nielsen, and Lisa Nielsen.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 40 years, Floyd LaMar Nielsen; her parents, Gloria and Theodore Thomas; her brothers, Guy and Teddy Thomas; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Olive Young and Orson Lamar Nielsen; and her brothers-in-law, Keith and Leon Nielsen.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Myton Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A viewing will be held that morning from 9:30 - 10:45 AM.

Burial will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park.
