Stuart E. Reed

Stuart E. Reed, age 86, of Ft. Duchesne, passed away July 25, 2026, at the Uintah Basin Senior Villa.

He was born July 20, 1940, in Ft. Duchesne, Utah, to Ilois Bekenneth and Ezilda Margaret Reed. He was very proud of his Reed family history. He was the great-grandson of Jimmy Reed, the first white man to have a fixed trading post in the territory in 1828. Jimmy and Margaret (Wy-ve-da) Reed had a son, James B, who was Stuart’s grandfather. Margaret was an Uinta Indian. James B and Rachel Burson Reed had a son Ilois BeKenneth who was Stuart’s father. He was very proud of his Native American heritage and was a Uintah Indian on his father’s side and on his mother’s side. He knew that not many people could claim the fact of being Uintah on both sides of their family.

Stuart was a Sundancer and he went into the Sweat Lodge. He worked as a truck driver for many years, going long-haul across the United States. His last job was with the Ute Indian Tribe, working on the Ute Tribe Farms in the Altamont and Arcadia areas. He retired in April 2024 at the age of 84.

He served in the United States Marine Corps with an honorable discharge.

Stuart had been married twice and was divorced. He had nine children.

He is survived by his companion, Jacque Larsen; his siblings, Franklin (JoAnna) Reed, of Roosevelt; Margaret (Raymond) Wissiup, Randlett; Cordie Secakuku, Magna; Roselda Ann Jones; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Stuart was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Robert M. Reed, Louis Rusty Reed, Donald L. Reed, Charles Bruce Hendricks, Carma Reed Gardner, and LaWanna Reed Tabbee.

Per his wishes he was cremated. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
