Philip Thompson

Philip Ross Thompson passed away peacefully at home with his children in the early morning of August 19, 2026 in Layton, Utah. Philip was born August 28, 1942 in Pasadena, California, to Wilford and Louise Thompson. When Philip was three years old his family moved from California to Talmage, Utah. This is where he spent his childhood and had many fond memories- doing the chores of milking the cows, feeding the chickens, haying and hauling firewood, fishing, playing with his older brother Steve and their dog Shug, shooting guns, hunting and exploring in the sage brush, cedar, and pinion trees. He attended the two-room Talmage Elementary and Altamont High School, graduating in 1960. He had many jobs during high school, working as a custodian for the seminary and high school buildings, working at the creamery, and for his Uncle John Thompson at his service station and garage in Duchesne.

Philip joined the Air Force in 1961, and was trained as an aircraft mechanic and worked on B-52 bombers at Castle and Travis Air Force bases in California. After his four years in the Air Force, he attended LDS Business College in Salt Lake City. There he studied Accounting and Business Administration. Soon after earning an associate degree, he was hired as the Clerk-Treasurer of the Duchesne County School District, where he worked for twenty-nine years.

He was blessed to marry Marva Mae Horrocks on August 29, 1968 in the Salt Lake City temple. Phil and Marva lived in Duchesne for 36 years, where they raised their two children, Michelle and Gary.

Phil was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and served faithfully in many callings in the Duchesne 2nd ward, including Bishop and as a counselor in three bishoprics. He was happiest when he could serve as the ward financial clerk. Phil and Marva were also devoted temple ordinance workers for eleven years, working in the Vernal, Utah and Idaho Falls, Idaho temples.

In 2006 Phil and Marva moved to Pocatello, Idaho to be close to their family. They missed their home in Duchesne and their many friends there. Phil was a very loving husband and cared for Marva until she passed away from dementia in 2019. He missed her very much. In 2024 Phil moved to Layton and lived at The Abbington Senior Living center. There he made many friends and enjoyed visiting during meals, attending performances by the Dusty Roses, and the many fun activities they provided.

Phil loved to collect pens, guns, movies, model airplanes, cars, and tractors. He loved Diet Pepsi and a chocolate Frosty from Wendy’s. He loved reading his collection of novels written by his friend Clair Poulson. He enjoyed the trips he took with his children to get new school buses for the school district, driving the buses from plants in Iowa, Georgia, and Canada. He loved to garden and grew delicious corn. He loved working in the yard and mowing the lawn. He loved going fishing and being outdoors. Philip was the most dedicated home teacher and minister, making sure he visited served his families every month. He loved to mow lawns and shovel snow for his neighbors. Phil loved his family and was dearly loved by them in return. He loved spending time with and was so proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He and Marva were very supportive and attended many recitals, concerts, games, and school programs. He was an incredibly kind, humble, and generous man. His favorite activity was taking the family out to eat and saying “This will all be on one ticket.”

He is survived by his daughter Michelle (Michael) Summers of West Point, Utah; his son Gary (Kristina) Thompson of Layton, Utah; Grandchildren Kate (Hunter) Nilson and great grandchildren Oliver and Maya of Bluffdale, Utah: Steven (Taylor) Summers of Layton, Utah; Rachel (Seth) Tracy and great grandchildren Amelia and Marianne of Bridge City, Texas; Evan Thompson of Layton; and Sam Thompson of Layton, Utah; sister Mary Hanberg of Altamont, Utah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marva, older siblings Doris, William, Steve, and his grandson Matthew Summers.

The family would like to express gratitude to the wonderful healthcare workers and staff at The Abbington, Enhabit Home Health, and Inspiration Hospice.

Funeral services will be held on August 29, 2026 at the Duchesne Stake Center at 11:00am, preceded by a viewing from 9:30-10:30.

Burial will be at the Altamont Cemetery, Altamont, Utah.
