Norman Cambridge, Sr.

December 28, 1953 — December 8, 2023

Roosevelt

Norman Cambridge Sr. age 69, left his ailing body to Mother Earth and began the journey to his Father Friday, December 8, 2023 in Roosevelt, UT.
He was born December 28, 1953 to Helen Harper and Francis Cambridge in Shiprock, NM. He was born for the Folding Arms, Black Streak Wood, Sleep Rock, and Coyote Gap Clans found near the Four Corners area. Norman was the oldest of four from Toadlena, NM, in the Two Greyhills area. He attended school in Flagstaff, AZ; Shiprock, NM, Roy, UT; and Ignacio, CO.
He met Merelynn Groves at BYU and married her in Provo, UT.  They had six children, Norman, Harley, Kelly, Karen, Micah, and Luke. They lived in Tucson, Window Rock, Roosevelt, and Myton.
Norman learned about the law and the land as a police officer for the Navajo Nation, and later became a court advocate that ultimately led to a Realty Specialist position for the government. He loved researching and reading historical documents about the land. He was one of the first to start land swaps to increase trust lands for the Navajo Nation and later the U and O Reservations. He abhorred corruption in government. People loved his document research and his court advocacy.
From youth he was a gifted artisan who could draw, paint, silversmith, bead, and do woodwork. He wrote many short stories published in three books, most notably Navajo Spaceships, under the pseudonym Johnny Rustywire. He had an online following worldwide.  He was connected online to his Dineh people, especially to those who had experienced the LDS placement program and the BYU Native recruitment by LDS President Spencer W. Kimball in the 70s.
He is survived by his wife, Merelynn, his sister, Barbara (Chandler, AZ), children, Norm, (Anne), Harley, Kelly, Karen (Austin), Luke, and grandchildren: Isiah, Ninabah (John) Jalynn (Alan), Kortney, Kruz, Kolby, Sera, Evan, Sofia, Maya, Lupe, Romeo, Adaija, and Eagle Valley; and great grandchildren: Melina and Talon.
He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Herman and Irvin, and his son, Micah.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 14, 2023  at 11AM in the Myton Community Center.  There will a viewing at the Hullinger Mortuary from 9:30 - 10:30 AM.
