Larry Leo Defa, age 83, of Hanna, Utah, passed away peacefully at his home on July 20, 2026, surrounded by the place and people he loved most.
Larry was born on September 21, 1942, in Heber, Utah, to Leo and Nettie (Lazenby) Defa. He grew up in Hanna and graduated from Tabiona High School in 1960. On July 11, 1959, he married the love of his life and high school sweetheart, Sheila Defa. Together they built a life centered on hard work, family, and the community they cherished.
After graduating, Larry worked as a gypo logger, traveling to several states before returning home to Hanna. Once back, he and his father founded Defa Logging, a business that reflected Larry’s remarkable work ethic and dedication. His business later expanded to the sawmill where he manufactured lumber and house logs that sold all around the world. He even milled his own logs for his beautiful log home. He was happiest when he was working and taking time off to go hunting.
Larry had a deep love for the outdoors, especially hunting in Utah’s mountains. He also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, where he could often be found trying his luck at the slot machines. Family reunions, music, dancing, and gatherings with friends and loved ones brought him great joy. He never missed an opportunity to celebrate life, and he was always ready for a good party. Larry had an extraordinary gift for storytelling, captivating everyone with his vivid memories, quick wit, and remarkable attention to detail. His stories will continue to be shared for generations.
Above all else, Larry loved his family. His greatest pride and legacy were the generations that followed him. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather whose love, guidance, and example will live on in each of them.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Nettie Defa, and his sisters, Joy, Lena, and DaVonna.
He is lovingly survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Sheila Defa; his children, Heidi (Joel) Gines, of Hanna, Utah; Pam Lefler, of Hanna, Utah; and Luke (Idawna) Defa, of Hanna, Utah. He also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
Larry’s life was defined by hard work, unwavering love for his family, and the countless memories he created with those around him. His laughter, stories, generous spirit, and enduring example will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
