Larry Joseph Allred, age 89, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026 in Vernal, Utah.
He was born on October 24, 1936, to Clyde Allred and LaRue Rawlings in Roosevelt, Utah.
In his younger years, Larry briefly attended Southern Utah University, where he tried out for the football team before deciding to pursue a different path. In 1954, while walking past a recruiting office in Salt Lake City, he made a life-changing decision to enlist in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict. He completed basic training in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and was later stationed at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.
While in Illinois, he was set up on a blind date with a young woman from Appleton, Wisconsin, Gail Bates. After just four dates, Larry and Gail were married on December 21, 1954, beginning a loving and devoted partnership that would last a lifetime. She died August 25, 2020.
During his service, Larry received orders to Japan, traveling by boat for 21 days to reach his assignment. While there, he was promoted to Airman First Class and placed in charge of the Crypto Maintenance section. Following the war, he was reassigned to McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey, where he was soon promoted to Sergeant. After completing his military service, Larry and Gail returned home to the Uintah Basin.
Shortly after their return, their daughter, Lisa Jo, was born. Nine years later, they welcomed their son, Brian Joseph, into the family.
Larry worked for L&L and G&L in Roosevelt before beginning a distinguished 27-year career with the United States Forest Service. As a civil engineer, he found great joy in working outdoors and contributed to numerous projects, including Little Hole, Mustang Ridge, and the Dutch John Boat Ramp. He was especially proud of his work on the Lower Stillwater project, where he transformed a gravel pit into an approved wetlands area for the Bureau of Reclamation in partnership with the Ashley National Forest.
Larry was deeply committed to serving his community. He was a proud member of Duchesne County Search and Rescue for 55 years, and also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Forest Service.
He enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life, including golfing, stamp and coin collecting, genealogy, and even panning for gold in his garage. Above all, Larry cherished time spent with his family, especially fishing together. He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his children, Lisa (Bobby) and Brian (Chris); grandchildren Kasey (Amber), Dustin (Hannah), Colt (Jess), Clint (Kadee), Seth (Emily), Brianne (Austin), Kayla (Wade), Blake (Lucy), and Cydney; and great-grandchildren Jaycee, Kagen, Ryker, Kwincee Jo, Olli, Hunter, Corri Jo, Huck, Thea, Hank, Jude, and Piper; and his brother Alan (Maxine) Laris and several nieces and nephews.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and LaRue; his wife Gail; his infant son, Stephen Joseph; his sisters, Lorraine Allred Jones and Sheila Laris Utley; his nephew Nick Laris and his beloved son-in-law, Bobby Brenton.
Larry will be remembered for his dedication to family, his service to his country and community, and his love of the outdoors. His legacy lives on in those who knew and loved him.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2026 at 6:00 PM at the Roosevelt West Stake Center.
Larry will be buried next to Gail in the Roosevelt Memorial Park at a later date, military honors will be presented at that time.
