Listen to Obituary

Joel Howard “Murph” Murphy, age 86, of Roosevelt, passed from this life on April 18, 2026, at home, at peace and surrounded by loved ones.

Heoel was born in Roosevelt, Utah on March 16, 1940, to Norman and Virgie Fraughton Murphy — missing St. Patrick's Day by a single day. He never quite got over it, taking to calling himself "Joel Howard Aloysius Digger O'Dare Murphy" for the rest of his life. He married Marsha Smith on June 30, 1977, in Elko, Nevada.

As a teenager, Joel's father worried he was running with the wrong crowd. Investigation revealed that Joel was the wrong crowd. He wore the title of "Oldest Living Teenager in Roosevelt" with pride, backed by bad-boy good looks and an unapologetic preference for cool cars.

His father wisely channeled this energy by bringing Joel along on trucking runs for the timber and coal industries, where he came to know every back road in the Uintah Basin. He later drove long-haul for LaRue Lamb, hauling gilsonite to Texas, California, Oklahoma and beyond. On the road he went by the CB handle "Lobo" and dubbed his wife Marsha "Pathfinder," a gentle nod to her legendary lack of directional instinct.

Joel also pit-crewed at the Prairie Dog Speedway, earned his scuba certification, and later put those diving skills to use with the Jeep Posse Search and Rescue. After trucking, he moved into the Basin's oil fields, worked as a salesman for Cellular One and then — at 62, an age when most men are eyeing the recliner — enrolled at the Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy and went to work as a jail guard in Duchesne. Lobo to the end.

In retirement, Joel and Marsha filled their days with side-by-side trips, time at their Tabiona cabin, visits with friends and family, and volunteering at the Uintah Basin Medical Center.

Joel is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Marsha; sister Mary; daughters Kiersten (Bart), Joelyn (Russ), Jamie (Brandon), and Tana; grandchildren Tyler (Aubrey), Tiana (Erik), Ricci (Brandon), Jaeger, Jace, Emily, and Landon; great-grandchild Oliver; and one more great-grandchild already on the way — proof that life, like Joel, keeps going.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and brother-in-law Dan Witt.

A Celebration of Life open house will be held Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 2–4 p.m. at the Roosevelt Baptist Church, 402 Hillcrest Drive. Per Joel's wishes, cremation has taken place.
