James “Jim” Markey, “Otis,” age 80, of Roosevelt, passed away Sunday September 17, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer, with his family by his side.
He was born August 21, 1943, in La Jolla, California, to Bud and Freda Markey.
Jim graduated from Union High School and went to Weber College for a degree in welding. Soon after, he married Carol Ann Russell and had two children, James “Tooter” and Christina. They later divorced.
He then met the love of his life, Karen Gagon Jaramillo and they were married. He was blessed with three more children, Jeremy, Brandon, and Chariti. Jim and Karen spent 44 years together along with their beautiful family.
Jim’s passion was welding. He loved to go to work everyday and everyone knew he had been on location by the Diet Coke cans left behind. He loved teaching others to weld and taught many young and old. He was very proud of what he did and his custom truck he built. He loved and was very proud to have three sons and two grandsons follow in his footsteps in the welding profession. If you knew Jim, chances are you have a “Balancing Man” that he made – it gave him great joy to give one to all of his family and friends. He had a great fondness for cars, rebuilding them and tinkering in his garage. He really liked to gamble and was often the lucky one coming home with a pocket full of money. He really enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family and many friends, working in his yard, planting his garden, and mowing his lawn as fast as the lawn mower would go.
Jim’s family was very important to him, and he loved when any of them would come visit, no matter how long they stayed. He was a kind and funny man whom everyone loved. He never got upset about much and usually had a funny joke or story to tell.
Jim is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Tooter (Nanette) Markey; Christina (Todd) Ashworth; Jeremy Jaramillo; Brandon (Kristy) Jaramillo; a brother, Mike (Glenna) Markey; and many grandchildren & great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Chariti LaRose; parents; and a sister, Deb Basham.
