Lucille Jean Wimmer Bills, age 91, our loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, neighbor and friend, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2024 in Millcreek, Utah surrounded by her family.
She was born on February 12, 1933 in Duchesne, Utah to Harold “Jack” and Lucille Wimmer. One of 13 children born into the family, she grew up, in the area of Duchesne and Nine-Mile Canyon where, in her early years, she attended a one-room schoolhouse and worked to help on her family ranch. She graduated from Duchesne High School, 2nd in her class.
She attended Brigham Young University where she was studying medical technology when she met and married Douglas Daley Bills in the Salt Lake Temple. She worked as a nurse to support Doug while he finished his Bachelor’s degree. They raised their family together, living in Ohio, Oklahoma, California and eventually settled in Salt Lake City, Utah where they resided for the rest of her life.
Jean was a beautiful example of service and charity to all those she met and especially loved children. She ran an in-home day care center for approximately 30 years. She was so loved by the families she served, that many of them invited her to the weddings of those children she cared for.
Jean was renowned for her skills in bread baking and taught us that one of the best ways to tell someone you love them was with a loaf of her delicious homemade whole wheat bread. Her cinnamon rolls were also a favorite, and often a gift to neighbors at Christmas. Christmas time also found her making amazing homemade fudge, toffee, and melt-in-your-mouth butter mints; a tradition she passed on to the next generations.
Jean spent her time serving all those around her, spoiling her beloved pet cats, being an avid “Ute” fan, and sewing. She was an expert Scrabble player and loved to do the daily cryptoquip. Her quilting skills were well known and respected. In her retirement years she pieced and stitched approximately 40 quilts, many of them in cooperation with her sweetheart, Doug. In spite of living in “the city” for all of her adult years, Jean always loved and was drawn to the rugged mountain beauty of the area she grew up in and her favorite retirement days were those spent at “the cabin” in Argyle Canyon, situated on land that was initially a family homestead.
She was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and fulfilled all of her callings faithfully.
The family would like to thank the staff at Beehive Homes where she spent the last months of her life, for their expert care and kindness. Special thanks also to Julie Forbush for the personal care she provided during the past two years.
Jean is survived by her eternal companion Doug, her children; Wade (Shelly) Bills, Bruce (Khristina) Bills and Jennifer (John) Newman; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
