Gerald Ray “Jake” Courtright, age 95, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2025, at his home in Roosevelt, Utah.
Gerald was born on July 24, 1930, in Bradford, Pennsylvania, to George and Bertha Courtright. He was the seventh of nine children and graduated from Bradford High School in 1949. Whether or not he was officially an honor student is unknown, but in the eyes of his children, he certainly was. Gerald was a truly intelligent man.
In 1950, Gerald enlisted in the United States Air Force and completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. While looking through photo albums, the family found a picture of him with his fellow Airmen and realized how meaningful it was that his great-granddaughter, Bausten Rasmussen, now works at Lackland as an Athletic Trainer for the Airmen and women training there.
During his time in the service, Gerald traveled to France, Germany, and many other countries. He was honorably discharged with high distinction.
On January 23, 1954, Gerald married the love of his life, Irma Lee Hickman. They shared 66 wonderful years together and raised four children.
Because of his work, the family moved often and lived in many different places. While moving frequently came with challenges, it also created lasting memories. Gerald enjoyed bowling and participated in both men’s and mixed leagues with Irma. A lifelong sports fan, he cheered for the Pittsburgh Steelers alongside his daughter, Sonya, and enjoyed basketball as well, having played in high school. The Utah Jazz later
became his team, and he loved attending games in Salt Lake City.
Above all, Gerald loved spending time with his family, who were his greatest joy. He also valued the time he shared with friends.
He is survived by his children: Becky (Lynn) Rasmussen, Roosevelt; Sonya Avila, Salt Lake City; and Ed (Vicky) Courtright, Roosevelt; 8 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Gerald was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Irma Lee Hickman Courtright; his son, Darryl Ray Courtright; his parents, George Raymond Courtright and Bertha Agnes Courtright; and his siblings Katrina Kloss, Carol (Peg) Hahn, Phylliss Swatsler, George Raymond Courtright Jr., Cora Jane (Dot) Daily, Marie (Maizie) Ammons, Hilton (Dinn) Courtright, and Richard (Dick) Courtright.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Hullinger Mortuary. There will be a viewing from 10-10:45 a.m.
Burial will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park, military honors will be presented by the Air Force Honor Guard, Roosevelt American Legion and the Patriot Guard Riders.
