George William "Bill" Hunt, age 83, of Vernal, Utah, returned to his Heavenly Father on Friday, December 26, 2025, at the University of Utah Hospital, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Bill was born on June 13, 1942, in Provo, Utah, to Ira Benjamin and Mary Irene Hunt. The youngest of three children, he was raised in Springville, Utah, and graduated from Springville High School in 1960. In 1965, Bill met the love of his life, Vickie Lynn Mecham, and the two were married on January 26, 1968, in Park City, Utah. Together, they established their first home and began raising their family in Duchesne, Utah.
Bill devoted his career to supporting his family through his work with the Bureau of Reclamation, a role that took him to many places throughout his life. While his address may have changed, one passion never did: treasure hunting! Bill found immense joy and adventure in uncovering pieces of the past, metal detector in hand, following old maps, speaking with locals, and searching for hidden treasures. His knowledge of local history and hidden sites was remarkable, and his research skills were truly exceptional. Always eager to help, Bill loved assisting others when they called on him to locate lost rings and other treasured items, bringing both relief and joy to those he served.
Music was one of Bill's great joys. He was a talented banjo player who loved to sing and dance, sharing his love of music with those around him.
He loved his family deeply. A playful tease at heart, he kept a watchful eye on everyone and always encouraged those he loved to believe in something greater than themselves.
Bill was deeply patriotic and proud of his military service. His love for his country was reflected in the flag that proudly flew from the pole in his front yard.
Bill is survived by his wife, Vickie Hunt, Vernal, UT; children Kristy (Chase) Hadden, Roosevelt, UT; Pennie (Ken) Madson, Vernal, UT; Kelly (James) Palmer, Lake Stevens, WA; 19 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Natalie Sutera; sister, Mary Frances Hunt; and brother, J Frank Hunt.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the Strawberry Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the Army Honor Guard, the Duchesne American Legion and the Patriot Guard Riders.
