Our loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, George R Chapman, 91, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at his home in Brigham City, Utah surrounded by his family and reuniting him with his sweetheart, Shirley.
He was born on March 26, 1935 to Henry Thomas and Lavon Rust Chapman, Despite facing early loss with the passing of his parents, George was nurtured by his maternal grandparents, Leroy and Clara Rust, who instilled in him a strong sense of resilience and compassion. George was reared and educated in Altamont, Utah, where he graduated from Altamont High School in 1953, while in high school he was on the basketball team and played the drums in a band. He also attended Utah Valley Vocational School where he received his associate degree in Diesel Mechanics.
George married his sweetheart, Shirley Amanda Oldham Chapman on November 9, 1963 in Logan, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Brigham City Temple on June 10, 2017. Shirley preceded him in death on March 15, 2019.
George worked at Hill Air Force Base from 1967 to 1995 as an Instrument Mechanic. After retiring from Hill Field, he later returned and worked as a contractor.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and currently a member of the Brigham City 19th Ward.
George belonged to a wood turning club. Some of his hobbies that he loved were wood turning, machinist with metal, reading, gardening, spending time outdoors, camping and fly fishing.
Surviving are his three children: Brian (Diana) Chapman of Perry, UT; Shellie Rae Chapman of Austin, Texas; Brent (ShaRee) Chapman, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Kent Remington and one sister, Leta (Leo) Snow.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Shirley and sister Gwendolyn Remington.
The family would like to thank Enhabit Hospice for the extraordinary love and care of our father, especially Dena, Cari, Alex. Shauna and Aaron.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 at 1:00 pm at the Brigham City 19th Ward Chapel, 105 Fishburn Drive. Services will be livestreamed at www.gilliesmortuary.com at George's obituary. A viewing will be held on Monday, May 25, 2026 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Gillies Funeral Chapel, 634 E 200 S., Brigham City, Utah and on Tuesday at the church from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at the church.
Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
