Douglas Miles, age 85, of Mt. Emmons, Utah, passed away peacefully on May 1 , 2023, in Syracuse, Utah.
He was born on April 25, 1938, to Edgar Henry and Olive Millie Thacker Miles. He was born at home in Mt. Emmons where he lived the rest of his life ranching and raising his family. Doug was number ten of ten children, with six sisters and three brothers. His father Edgar started a dairy operation in 1928 and Doug continued with the dairy until 2002. He grew up riding horses and helping his dad with all of the necessary work. Doug said his main goal was to please his dad because of the way he would praise him. He graduated from Altamont high school in 1956.
Doug met JoAnn Callister in Provo and asked her to marry him after she moved to Roosevelt to work for the USU Extension services. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on June 23, 1966. She died January 23, 2021.
Doug and JoAnn raised six children in Mt, Emmons and shared many happy years together. He loved trips to Diamond Mountain to check on the summer range and cattle there. He worked every day to provide for his family and keep his land and cattle in excellent condition. He loved to ride a good horse and watch his children and grandchildren enjoy the lifestyle he loved so much.
Doug served as a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The members of his ward enjoyed when he would bear his testimony and share special stories and experiences. He will be greatly missed in his community. He made many good friends throughout his lifetime and talked fondly of them. We know he's on a ranch in heaven watching over the green fields and enjoying the reunion with many loved ones who have passed before him.
Doug is survived by his sister Veva Miles Clegg; children, Layne (Jayne) Miles; Sue Ann Crozier; Janet (Ross) Clark; Thomas Miles; Marjory (John) Howes; Charles (Wendy) Miles; 21 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn; his parents and eight siblings, grandson Jake Douglas Howes and great-grandson, Brody Crozier.
