Dorothy Dee Stevenson Hicken, age 90, of Roosevelt, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2025, at the Sr. Villa with family by her side.
Dorothy was born August 11, 1935, in Mountain Home, Utah to Clifford B and
Rayda Louise Jenson Stevenson. She married Gerald Thomas Hicken on October 31, 1951, in Elko, Nevada. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on June 20, 1966.
Dorothy was a wonderful cook and baker, a talent she passed on to several of her granddaughters, who continue to share it with their own daughters, keeping her traditions alive through the generations. She was known for her witty personality and was always a joy to be around. She loved serving others and visiting with people.
Dorothy completed cosmetology school and owned and operated her own salon for 40 years, mentoring many in the profession, and building lasting relationships with her clients. After retiring, she returned to work at the Uintah Basin Care Center, where she served as a dietitian for about ten years.
Dorothy cherished time with her family. She was a devoted supporter of all their activities, attending countless sporting events for her children and, in later years, cheering on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their dance/cheer recitals, competitions, and sporting events.
She loved reunions whether they involved overnight stays in trailers, campfires, side-by-sides, and delicious Dutch oven meals, or a local outing to the bowling alley or swimming pool. She especially enjoyed the “family auctions” that included many homemade gifts to show off talents. Her last big celebration was a surprise 89th birthday party in Ballard, Utah, surrounded by family and friends.
The last couple of years, Dorothy spent time at each of her sons’ homes and made fast friends everywhere she went. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and paint-by-number activities on her iPad. She could never quite run a cellphone, so she used her iPad to stay connected with family and friends.
Dorothy was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and had a strong testimony of the gospel. She held many callings through the years. As a “boy mom,” she excelled as a scout leader, encouraging her sons, grandsons, and many others to achieve their Eagle Scout Awards. Her favorite calling was serving as a temple worker in the Vernal Temple, a role she carried out for many years. She treasured the time spent with friends both traveling to and from the temple and during her service there. Even after being released from her calling, she continued to attend faithfully nearly every Thursday until near the end of her life.
She is survived by her children: David Gerald (Arlinda) Hicken of Roosevelt, Utah; Gary Thomas (Cindy) Hicken of Roosevelt, Utah, Brad Max (Pam) Hicken of Mantua, Utah; and Shane Dee Hicken of Roosevelt, Utah; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren; her siblings, Virgil C. “Jim” (Helen) Stevenson and Andrew J. (Pam) Stevenson; her sister-in-law, Patricia Stevenson; and her brother-in-law, Jerry Evans.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a grandson, Brenden Hicken; and her siblings: Jack C. Stevenson, Karen D. Evans, and Max B. Stevenson, who was killed in the Korean War.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at the Uintah Basin Rehabilitation Center and hospice for the compassionate care and kindness they provided to Dorothy in her final days.
