After celebrating her one hundred and first birthday with family members and friends, five days later Doris Elaine Murdock Mahoney went on to an even bigger celebration on April 28, 2026. Included in that celebration were those that proceeded her in death: Parents, Millie Lindsay Murdock and Thomas Calvin Murdock, husband Neil Kenneth Mahoney, Siblings, Vernon Murdock, Kathleen Campbell, Hope Clark and their spouses Elizabeth Murdock, Ohlan Campbell, Carl Clark and Lois Murdock, little brother Calvin Murdock, baby Andy John, In-laws, Mary and Louris Mahoney.
Doris was born in Heber, Utah at her Aunt Mamie's house on April 23, 1925. She spent her childhood playing under the lilac bushes with her built-in playmates/siblings. She sang with her sister Hope as they washed the family's dishes in a large washtub. When chores were finished and the sun was setting all three sisters climbed into a shared bed. She adored her siblings her entire life.
After graduating from Wasatch High School, during World War II, Doris worked at Palace Drug in Heber. She sold drugstore items and worked behind the soda counter, where she blended malted milkshakes and sodas with a pump of syrup mixed with seltzer. One particular customer, freshly home from the war, caught her eye. His name was Neil Mahoney, a home town boy from the Mahoney farm in Lake Creek. They married in the Salt Lake City Temple on August 19, 1946. He died after 73 years together on October 18, 2019.
Neil and Doris had a small home transported from Salt Lake City to the farm in Lake Creek. Into that home came two daughters and then two sons. Her day started early filling Neil's black lunchbox. While she worked in the kitchen, she practiced the songs that she would be performing with the Choralette singing group in which she sang soprano and served as an officer.
The family attended the Center Creek Ward where Sister Doris Mahoney was called to be the baton waving chorister for the congregation.
When their children were all in school Doris found employment outside their home. She worked for Barker's Jewelry on Mainstreet in Heber. She loved getting trays of rings, earrings and necklaces out to show customers and she kept the large glass display cases fingerprint free. She later worked at Sunshine Laundromat.
Upon their retirement Neil and Doris enjoyed traveling around the United States. The couple spent winters in Overton, Nevada then St. George, Utah and twelve summers at Holiday Park in Summit County, Utah. In each of those places they made lasting friendships. Some of those relationships were put to the test when playing the card game Phase 10. Doris considered that game a competitive sport. Neil and Doris served a mission in Tallahassee, Florida for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The last five years she was a resident of Roosevelt, Utah under the loving care of her daughter and son-in-law Virginia and Larry Abplanalp. Even though she wasn't able to get out into the community to continue building friendships, the community came to her and she made many close friends many of which called her, "Grandma".
She leaves behind: siblings, Tom Murdock, Lee and Barbara Murdock; sister-in-law, Glenna Lloyd; children, Virginia (Larry) Abplanalp, Claudia (Steven) Anderson, Kent (Kathy) Mahoney, Roger (Colette) Mahoney; 24 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great granddaughters.
Well Grandma, you made it into your favorite part of the newspaper, the obituaries. We hope we summed up your 101 years to your liking and we hope to carry on and make you proud. We will try to make our bed every day, feed the hummingbirds and sing a stanza or two of a song when a life event brings a song to mind.
