Obituary

    Joseph “Ted” Edwin Olpin, 96, of American Fork passed away Thursday, December 26, 2019.   Ted was born October 23, 1923 in American Fork, Utah to Joseph and Violet Larsson Olpin.  He married Edith Helmer and together had five children.   They were later divorced.  He married Nancy Jane Willey Thompson on February 2, 1973 in Evanston, WY.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the Provo LDS Temple.
    Ted lived in Pleasant Grove until he was four years old when the family moved to establish the Olpin Mortuary in Heber City.   Ted graduated from Wasatch High School in 1940.  Ted joined the U S Army and served in the European Theater during WWII.  He served as an Army Medic and received a Purple Heart and was awarded a Bronze Star.   Upon returning from the war, Ted attended the College of Mortuary Science in Chicago and became a licensed Funeral Director.   He worked in the family mortuary business in Heber City until 1948 when Ted and his father established Olpin Mortuary in Roosevelt, Utah.   He operated that funeral home until 1981 when it was sold to the Hullinger Family.  Ted continued working in the funeral service industry in Cle Elum, WA, Price, Vernal and Pleasant Grove, Utah.
    Ted was a devoted member of the Church of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings.  His favorite calling was serving as a Stake Clerk/Auditor in the Roosevelt Stake.  Ted was active in Scouting for much of his life and was awarded the Silver Beaver.
    Ted had a great passion for aviation and owned several small planes throughout his life.  He was the search and rescue pilot for many years in Duchesne County.
    He is survived by his wife Nancy of American Fork; nine children: Joseph Dale Olpin, Rosewood, CA; Nancy Kay Hansen, Logan, UT; Alta Olpin, Logan, UT; Darlene (Gordon) Branson, Ellensburg, WA; David (Terri) Olpin, West Jordan, UT; Leonard DuCharme, Lehi, UT; Julie (Darren) Jensen, Cedar City, UT; Robin (Geo) Ross, Vernal, UT; Naomi Jane (John, deceased) Coons, South Jordan,  UT; daughter-in-law, Karen DuCharme; 31 grandchildren and many loving great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; sisters: Clara (George) Snell, Violet (Paul, deceased) Loertscher and June (Hardy) Anderson; brothers-in-law, Bruce Wasden and Dick Haight.  
    Ted was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings: Inezelle (George) Knight, Mary Wasden, Guy (Shirley) Olpin, Betty (Lowell) Coleman and Audrey Haight; stepson, Wayne DuCharme;  grandchildren: Teresa Mabbutt, Shelly Pope, Aaron DuCharme, Nigel DuCharme and Shauna Lee Robb.
    Funeral services will be held Monday, December 30, 2019 at 1:00 pm  at the Stake Center, 240 South Center Street, American Fork, where family and friends may attend a viewing from 11:30am-12:45pm prior to services.  An additional viewing will be held Tuesday December 31, 2019 from 11:00am-12:00 noon at Hullinger Mortuary, 457 East 300 North  Roosevelt, Utah.   
    Interment will follow in Roosevelt Memorial Park at 12:30 pm. with military honors presented by the Roosevelt American Legion.
