Joyce Fetzer Powell

August 19, 1937 ~ October 27, 2019 (age 82)

Obituary

Joyce Fetzer Powell, age 82, of Montwell, passed away on October 27, 2019 with her husband of 58 years by her side.
Joyce was born on August 19, 1937 to Henry Peter Fetzer and Florence Jackson Fetzer in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was the 3rd of 11 children and loved being part of a large family. She graduated from East High School, then the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. While at the U, she made lifelong friends in her sorority sisters. Her professional teaching included: first grade, special education, and working with adults who were earning their GEDs.
Joyce was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. She had a testimony of the restored gospel and held many callings. Two of her favorite were teaching Relief Society Cultural Refinement lessons and leading the music in Primary. She and her husband served missions at Cove Fort in 2003 and as Service Missionaries in the Neola Ward House. She also served as an organist at the Vernal temple where she loved that she could play as slowly as she wanted.
She liked being part of a big family so much she decided to have one of her own. On December 22, 1960, she married Gardell Powell in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had 9 children. Joyce loved being a mom and her children always knew they were loved. Her family grew with in-laws, 28 grandkids and 3 great grandkids.
Joyce was a lover of the arts. She played cello through college and then in many community groups as well as acting in community plays. She loved the Opera and even as her memory left her she would brighten to the sound of it. Joyce was always active and participated in the UBIC triathlon into her 70’s. Like everything, she did the triathlons her way. When asked if she had really counted the  laps, she cleverly answered that she counted every lap she swam. She also thought that if you were 70 you should be allowed short cuts, and she took them.
She loved to learn new things, and kept herself busy practicing and developing new talents. She could be found learning to play instruments from around the world, weaving, making pine needle baskets, painting and story telling. Joyce and Gardell traveled and enjoyed experiencing cultures and sites of the country and the world, and enjoyed visiting with her children in their homes.
Joyce was loved and adored by her husband, her children and their spouses, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, primary children, students and every one that met her.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Joydell Beavers, parents, sisters; Lorna Monson and Norine Smith, and her brother Kent Fetzer.
She is survived by her children; Gwenna Powell, Gar (Shelby) Powell, Nathan (Becky) Powell, Travis (Megan) Powell, Amy (Kodie) Brunsvik, Militza (Johnnie) Canova, Darsha (Harold) Stanley, and Juliana (Jarek) Doubrava. She is also survived by sisters; Barbara Hamblin, Katherine Fetzer, Pamela Hawker and Brothers Grant Fetzer, Steven Fetzer, Lowell Fetzer, and Brian Fetzer.
