Joseph Williams ShieldsJuly 25, 1936 ~ May 19, 2017 (age 80)
Joseph William Shields, age 80, of Pleasant Valley, passed away May 19, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
He was born July 25, 1936, in Roosevelt, to Marvin Wanless and Ilenna Nielsen Shields, the fourth of six children. He lived in Arcadia and Pleasant Valley most of his life, attending Myton Elementary and graduating from Union High School.
He married Adele Lamb on June 29, 1954, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died January 19, 1993. He married Carol LeFevre on September 11, 1993, in Tabiona.
Joe was a gilsonite miner in South Myton and Colorado. He tried a new business in Texas for a few months, but decided that he liked ranching with his family in the Basin more than anything. He ran cows on Diamond Mountain, Brush Creek, Hanksville, and leasing his neighbors’ pastures. He had several favorite horses. He was a member of the Uintah Basin Grazing Association for 40 years and when he was younger received the “Outstanding Young Rancher” award.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and his family served a two year mission in Randlett, and he enjoyed his Scouts while serving there. He was a Scoutmaster and held other positions in the Myton LDS Ward. He had a strong testimony of the Savior that he often shared. He attended the temple until his health declined.
Joe was always working; he loved being on the mountain with his horse & cows most of all. He loved fast cars and cadillacs! Joe was very congenial and loving to everyone he met. His integrity was an inspiration to all. He was a very strong-minded person and he never complained.
Joe is survived by his wife, Carol, of Pleasant Valley; children, Joseph Wayne (Susan) Shields, Chile; Daniel (Teresa) Shields, Jana Shields (Danny) Jenkins, both of Roosevelt; 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 5 step-children and their families; brothers and sister, Norma Hansen, Vernal; Jerry (Laurel) Shields, Farmington; Gary (Thelma) Shields, Bridgeland; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wanless & Ilenna; his wife, Adele; his brothers, Gordon Shields, Wayne Shields (killed in the Korean War); grandson, Jesse Shields, and step-son, Jeff Jones.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at the Myton LDS Chapel. There will be a viewing on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Hullinger Mortuary and on Wednesday from 10-10:45 a.m. at the church.
Burial will be in the Roosevelt Memorial Park.
